Hi, I’m Livia Stein Freitas (she/her). I’m a Computer Science and English student at Grinnell College, graduating in May 2025.

I am experienced in learning and evaluating different machine learning models, implementing efficient data structures and algorithms, analyzing hardware design issues (pipelining, caching, parallelism), and more.

During the summer of 2023, I conducted self-directed research on natural language processing, machine learning, and linguistic revitalization for indigenous Brazilian languages. I presented my findings at the MINK-WiC 2023 conference, in Kansas City, MO. My talk focused on innovative machine learning models for processing low-resource and morphologically rich languages.

As a Grinnell Vivero Fellow, I collaborate with faculty on a digital project, learn new skills weekly, and tutor other students on digital methods of analysis and presentation. I am currently working with Professor Ross Haenfler, chair of the College’s Social Studies division, on updating the Subcultures and Sociology pedagogical website.

Since starting college, I’ve been a Computer Science peer educator, mailroom clerk, and STEM summer camp teacher with TigerLily STEM. After graduating, I will pursue a PhD in Computer Science to become a professor or research scientist.
